Tea Party Caucus Pushing Forward Nationwide Gun Ownership Mandate Legislation

There is a new piece of legislation about to be brought to the floor of Congress. The “Nationwide Gun Ownership” Mandate, otherwise known as the “Guns Save Lives” bill, is ready to be brought to a vote.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) of the House Tea Party Caucus created this new piece of legislation citing the “need for every American own a firearm.” Several other Tea Party Congressmen and women have supported the bill and have helped it gain the momentum needed to come to the floor for a vote. Senate Tea Party Caucus members Rand Paul (R-KY) and Jim DeMint (R-SC) have also shown their support for the bill and plan on making sure it comes to a vote in the Senate as well.

Rep. Gohmert said the reason why he feels this bill is so important is “that through this legislation lives will be saved. If every American owns a gun, everyone will know that everyone else owns a gun and there will be a mutual respect. We need to arm America now, times are getting rough and we never really know who our enemy is or what they look like anymore. I truly believe that by mandating a gun into the hands of every capable American we will make America safer, help Americans live longer, and show the world that we are not anyone to mess with.”

When asked if he thought the gun mandate could be compared to the health care mandate put forward by the “Affordable Care Act,” Gohmert responded saying, “Guns save lives, health care isn’t a must have. What has health care ever done to save a life? It’s just a socialist scam to control our lives and yet another reason why we should be armed and ready to take on anyone who wants to take our freedoms.”

Democrats in both the House and Senate are bemused by the legislation and are doing everything they can to make sure it doesn’t pass. Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz compared the legislation to a “lawnmower over the intelligence of the founders of this great nation.”  Rep. Schultz is also perplexed by Rep. Gohmert’s comments about health care being compared to guns saying, “If he doesn’t realize that health care saves more lives than guns, we should start an IQ test as a prerequisite to running for public office.”
