Wealthy GOP Members Feel Picked On by President’s State of the Union Address

Wealthy GOP members feel they were being held to task by President Obama’s call to award companies that create jobs here in the United States while increasing taxes for companies shipping jobs overseas. Many were shocked to learn that the President was putting people over profits, especially their off shore profits. Speaker Boehner was quoted as saying, “If the President’s plan is implemented we can see thousands of Swiss Bankers lose their jobs as well as tens of thousands of Wall Street CEOs lose billions in hard-earned bonuses. If the President’s clean energy plan is implemented it will harm profits for coal and oil companies as well as reducing the profits of electric  companies because they’d be forced to lower rates because electricity created by clean energy will increase the surplus. It was also a cheap shot by the President to mention insider trading by members of the House and Senate, which is seen as supplemental income on the Hill ”

Candidate Mitt Romney who was in favor of allowing the auto industry to effectively go belly up commented all he heard in the President’s speech was, “taxes, taxes, off shore companies, taxes, Iraq, taxes, taxes, auto industry, insider trading, more taxes.”  When asked what he thought of the President’s veiled reference to his comment regarding allowing the auto industry to fail, Gov. Romney said, he was misquoted and what he really meant to say was that,” the auto industry was going belly up due to government regulations and that government regulations should go belly up. The auto industry bounced back because we reduced government interference not because we gave them billions of dollars, the bail out had nothing to do with it and in fact it actually hurt their recovery by forcing them to pay back loans more quickly. CEOs lost billions in bonuses which could have been used to stimulate Wall Street and in turn trickle down to Main Street.”

Newt Gingrich was quoted as saying, “Here we have to confront the truth about President Obama.  Economic growth and prosperity is not really at the top of his agenda. He will always prefer a food stamp economy to a paycheck economy and call it fair.” What the former speaker failed to mention is that more people were on food stamps and unemployment were actually higher under George W. Bush than currently under Obama or that statistically more white people are on food stamps than minorities.

Many GOP leaders are angry that the President has lowered himself to the use of empirical facts and logical arguments as opposed to the GOP’s preferred standard of  hyperbole, rhetoric and manufactured untruths. The GOP has long seen the use of empirical scientific evidence and logic divorced from religious doctrines and dogma as a Left Wing plot to confound the religious right from understanding the truth that conservative religious leaders have laid before them, free from the need to actually confront the apparent contradictions to modern scientific thought or social conventions. Rick Santorum is furious that the Democrats fail to see that the current economic collapse is being caused by gay marriage and not what the Democrats claim is rampant corporate corruption and greed on the part of Wall Street.

Gov. Mitch Daniels gave the rebuttal speech for the GOP and referred to the Presidents policies as “trickle down government” but failed to explain his own party’s trickle down government in regards to women’s and worker’s rights, voter suppression and their failure for holding those responsible for the economic collapse accountable for their actions but that would punish prosperity regardless of its ill-gotten nature.  The President has laid his cards on the table and it’s time for the GOP to ante up or fold.
