Jon Huntsman Places Last In Important Poll, Campaign In Turmoil

In another of a long series of setbacks Republican Jon Huntsman has placed last in another important straw poll.  On Monday the results were announced of the highly anticipated straw poll of the Comedy Writers of America.  As expected the three front-runners for the Republican nomination finished in a near dead heat.   Bachmann and Perry finished in a statistical tie.  Romney, Santorum, Gingrich and Cain trailed by just a few points.  There is nothing surprising with those results.  It’s well known that the Republican candidates compete daily to be the butt of the late night television monologues.  I believe that the take away from this poll is the last place finish of former Utah governor and ambassador to China Jon Huntsman.  He received zero votes.  Basically, what the major comedy writers in America are saying is that they can find no material with which they can ridicule Jon Huntsman.  This poll is important because getting ridiculed by comedians is an important campaign tactic of the Republican candidates.

This year the Republican field is especially crowded with strong candidates who give comedians so much material from which to choose.  A reasonable candidate, like Huntsman, can’t distinguish himself amongst all of those ripe targets of comedic gold.  Let’s start with the fact that he agrees that Global Warming is a problem.  Where is the opportunity for a laugh when he takes that sort of position?  Good comedy needs a candidate like Rick Perry who says “The biggest source of carbon dioxide is Al Gore’s mouth.”  It’s a great quote because he thinks he is being funny, but really he just sounds stupid.  Or, take the fact that Huntsman was appointed by President Obama to be our ambassador to China.  How can a centrist candidate like that compete with Michele Bachmann who says, “I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out: Are they pro-America or anti-America?”  Next take a look on Huntsman’s stand on LGBT issues.  In a letter to a gay supporter he wrote “Let’s hope that someday–all people are seen as equal under the laws of our land.”  Contrast that with Rick Santorum who said “If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything.”  In the race to Crazy Town (AKA: the Republican Primaries) Huntsman finishes dead last.

Ironically by finishing last Huntsman has actually given the comedy writers an opportunity to poke fun at of him.  The punch line about Huntsman becomes the fact that there is no punch line.  Admittedly not a great joke, but when you give so little you can only expect so much.
